Natural Skincare Ingredients for combination and oily skin

Skincare ingredients for combination and oily skin don’t need to be cooked up in a laboratory – luckily for us they can be found in nature! Try out these 10 natural skincare ingredients which are best suited for combination and oily skin:

Natural skincare ingredients

1. Safflower Seed Oil

There are two types of safflower oil, one higher in oleic acid and the other higher in linoleic acid. The one that is good for combination and oily skin is higher in linoleic acid because skin cells that are low in linoleic acid tend to produce more sebum (oil) that is thicker than normal and can lead to clogged pores.

2. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel works as an astringent (something that constricts skin cells) that helps to shrink pores and soak up excess oil if you have overactive sebaceous (oil) glands which is common for people with combination and oily skin.

3. Lemon Balm

While its name infers it is from the citrus family of plants, lemon balm is actually from the mint family. The leaves of this mint plant are high in tannins which work as an astringent to help promote clear skin. It also contains caffeic and ferulic acid which are able to penetrate to the deeper layers of your skin. This helps skin care ingredients to get to where they are needed – which is past the first layer of skin (the epidermis) as this is predominantly made up of dead skin cells.

4. Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is natural ingredient super star, it contains a natural source of hydrogen peroxide that accounts for it’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation properties. This help to reduce the occurrence of breakouts and reduce the appearance of them if they do occur.

5. Kanuka

Kanuka is a natural skincare ingredient you may not have heard of but you can probably guess from the name that it is related to Manuka (and you would be right!). Kanuka comes from the leaves of the Kanuka tree which is a type of tea tree that is native to New Zealand. Tea tree oils help to clear up breakouts and is one of the most popular natural skincare ingredients for clear skin.

6. Ylang Ylang Flower Oil

This oil is made by steam distilling the flowers of the Ylang Ylang plant which produces an essential oil. Essential oils help to balance the skins own oil production which makes them an ideal ingredient in skin care products formulated for combination and oily skin. It’s important to note there are concerns with some citrus based essential oils increasing photosensitivity (how sensitive the skin is to UV rays) so while citrus essential oils like lemon and orange are good for breakouts this makes them not a good choice for using as one of your natural skincare ingredients.

7. Grape Seed Oil

Grape seed oil has multiple benefits for skin so it’s no wonder this is one of the oldest natural skin care ingredients used to combat combination and oily skin. It contains vitamin C and E, flavonoids (which provide antioxidant protection) and its high linoleic acid content helps to balance our skin’s natural oil consistency.

8. Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose is full of essential fatty acids that help to maintain the skin’s natural barrier. It is a strong anti-irritant which means that it can help to prevent the inflammation commonly associated with breakouts. Evening primrose can also be taken as a supplement and is often recommended for people who suffer from hormonal acne. If you suffer from hormonal acne speak to your doctor or naturopath before taking any supplements.

9. Green Tea

Green tea which is also known as Camellia Sinensis provides antioxidant protection for skin cells. This means it helps to protect skin from free radicals that can damage skin so is a great ingredient for promoting healthy skin. Because these antioxidants are so beneficial to us, drinking green tea as well as having this as one of your natural skincare ingredients in your skin care routine will do wonders for your skin.

10. Manuka Leaf Oil

Manuka trees are where the bees go to pollinate and create Manuka honey so it’s no wonder the leaves and flowers of the Manuka Tree are helpful for controlling combination and oily skin. As with Kanuka this can be in the form of an oil or extract in skin care products and its role is to provide antibacterial and healing properties to skin creams. When this is added as an oil into skin care products it is an essential oil so it helps to maintain the skins natural sebum (oil) production and has quite a potent fragrance – so much so that only a very small amount is commonly used in skin care products!
